Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is characterized by an unpleasant odor of the mouth.
Bad Breath can be caused by poor dental hygiene, dry mouth,dental problems, tobacco products, foods, mouth infections and medications.
Some medical conditions like diabetes, acid reflux, sinus infection, postnasal drip, liver or kidney diseases can also cause mouth odour.

Ways to Combat Mouth Odour
1. Practice good Oral Hygiene.
Brush your teeth twice a day, brush in the morning and don’t forget to brush at night too.
Brush with thoroughly to remove food debris & plaque, replace your toothbrush every two month.
2. Scrape Tongue.
Tongue scraping decreases the fungi, bacteria and dead cells that can cause odor.
Scrape your tongue every morning with a spoon or tongue scraper. Hold the tip of the tongue with gauze to pull it forward in order to clean the back of the tongue.
3. Lime Juice.
When the lime juice enters your body, it readily ionizes to provide a strong alkaline effect on the inner body metabolism. Hence. it helps to eliminate the acidic residues from your mouth and reduces bacterial growth.
Rinse your mouth thoroughly with lime juice mixed in water.
4. Apple Cider vinegar.
Apple Cider Vinegar helps to balance pH level and kill bacteria
It can be used as a mouthwash, mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water and gargle for 15 seconds.
5. Stay Hydrated
One of the major causes of Halitosis is Dry mouth also called Xerostomia. Dry mouth can cause mouth odour, because saliva is necessary to moisten the mouth and neutralize acids produced by plaque. It also helps to wash away dead cells that accumulate on the tongue, cheeks and gums. If not thoroughly removed, cells decompose causing bad breath.
Water keeps your mouth moist and helps to freshen breath.
Drink plenty of water and swish cool water around in your mouth to avoid dryness.
6. Citrus Fruits.
Citrus Fruits are high in Vitamin C which helps to create an environment where bacteria growth cannot reside.
Citrus fruits include grapefruit, clementines, oranges, lemons, etc. Add citrus fruits to your daily diet to help cure mouth odor.
7. Drink Herbal Tea.
Herbal tea made from herbs like peppermint, tea tree, sage, myrrh, clove have been used for centuries to fight bad breath.
Drink herbal teas made from peppermint, thyme, anise, cinnamon or ginger.
8. Baking Soda.
Baking soda is a very effective remedy for bad breath, it changes the acidity level in your mouth, which makes it impossible for bacteria to thrive.
Add little baking soda on your toothbrush, brush thoroughly with it, since this helps dislodge many odorous particles that contribute to bad breath and then rinse with water. You can also purchase toothpastes that contain a little amount of baking soda.
9. Chew Cloves.
Cloves are anti-microbial, anti-septic and anti-fungal. Cloves aromatic oil is antibacterial, it kills the bacteria that cause bad breath and other digestive problems.
Chew clove to freshen the breath.
10. Eat Sugarless Gum or candy.
This freshens breath and stimulates the production of saliva which helps to wash away food particles and bacteria.
Mints and Gum containing Xylitol are best.
